Public security minister Tiran Alles has said that there was no grounds for moving a no-faith motion against speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

In a speech to the House during the debate on the motion that was subseqently defeated, he referred to the allegations contained therein.

Alles said the passage of the online safety bill and the appointment of the police chief have both been done lawfully and in accordance with the constitution.

Explaining both issues in detail, the minister said unnecessary issues should not be created by spreading falsehoods.

He urged the opposition against doing so in order to target votes.

Alles also made mention of the arrest of several Hindus at a site at Nedunkerni against which opposition members even staged a protest in the House.

The place with Buddhist ruins belongs to the Archaeology Department and no Kovil exists there, he said, adding that a Siva Lingam was placed there just last year after which Tamils started claiming the place.

The arrests were made for violating a court order, he said, adding that troublemakers anywhere would be dealt with accordingly.
