The Agriculture Ministry is under pressure by the political authority to make payments to fertilizer importers that remain halted for around five years.

The payments were suspended after the fertilizer intended to be subsidized to farmers was given for other purposes.

The attorney general has found that to be an offence under the public property act and recommended police action.

A few of the 17 companies that imported the fertilizer in 2018 and 2019 admitted to having released their stocks for purposes other than farming.

The government decided to allot Rs. 32.5 billion to grant the fertilizer subsidy during the period in question.
