The government is without a correct idea or statistics on the country’s population, which caused the ‘Aswesuma’ to be a failure, said opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.
He said an immediate census should take place to obtain an understanding on household expenditure, he told a House debate today (10) on the upcountry Tamils.
With the required statistics available, steps should be taken to strengthen the economy of upcountry Tamils, he said.
There are an economically-active estate community of 400,000 and non-active community of nearly 300,000, he said.
Pointing out a number of issues faced by this community, he called for immediate solutions for them.
