The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has decided to conduct a public hearing into the planned wind energy project in Mannar by India’s Adani Group.

The CEA has concluded accepting views and proposals in writing with regard to the project, its deputy director general N.S. Gamage has told BBC Sinhala Service.

All the proposals will be referred to the Sustainable Energy Authority, he said.

Environmentalists and well as area residents say wind power plants already in operation in Mannar have created flooding threats and drinking water shortages.

There is also adverse impact on migratory birds and the tourism industry too could be impacted, they warn.
