Political parties and groups are organizing May Day events that will mainly showcase their strength ahead of the presidential polls.
The UNP rally, presided by president Ranil Wickremesinghe, takes place in front of Maligawatte police station.
The NPP is having separate rallies in Colombo, Jaffna, Matara and Anuradhapura.
The SJB’s main May Day event takes place at Chatham Street in Colombo, while another is organized in the plantations.
The SLPP will hold its rally at Campbell Park in Borella.
The Sirisena faction of the SLFP marks the day with a rally in Gampaha.
Police say a total of 40 rallies will take place on May Day.
More than 3,100 personnel will be deployed to maintain law and order and to direct traffic, said police media spokesman Nihal Thalduwa.
He said prior permission should be obtained for the use of drone cameras to cover the events.
