President Ranil Wickremesinghe has mediated to raise the wages of estate workers.

Labour minister Manusha Nanayakkara has instructed his officials to expedite the related process.

The minister had a meeting with trade unions with regard to a wage hike proposal submitted by the employers federation.

TUs disagreed with the federation’s proposal and asked the wages be raised as per the proposal of their own.

They also briefed the minister about other issues faced by estate workers.

Nanayakkara said their professional rights would be safeguarded via a new employment act.

Minister Jeevan Thondaman, MP Vadivel Suresh and east governor Senthil Thondaman were also present at the discussion.
