The Sri Lanka Freedom Party's (SLFP) attempts to form a new alliance has hit a snag as it is planned to be supportive of either the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) or president Ranil Wickremesinghe.

SLPP breakaway MPs and SLFP ministers in the government are said to be behind this plan.

This has been opposed by the SLFP, which wants an independent alliance to contest future elections.

Also, the Lanka Sama Samaja Pakshaya (LSSP), Communist Party of Sri Lanka (CPSL) and the Mahajana Party are supportive of that stand.

The end result is likely that the SLFP will form the proposed alliance with those parties only.
