The tusker Agbo is regaining health with its gunshot wounds being treated by wildlife officials for more than a month now.
The 10-footer was found with its left leg badly injured by a locally-made gun at Sandanankulam reserve in Tirappane on 12 June.
Veterinarian Chandana Jayasinghe said the tusker’s recovery would take time as the leg had broken bones.
MP Duminda Dissanayake yesterday (30) visited the location and inquired into its treatment.
Meanwhile, the Wildlife Conservation Forum claimed at least 6,000 tuskers and elephants had been killed in the past decade.
Its secretary Nayanaka Ranwella told the media the remaining ones should be protected, with an immediate programme implemented to resolve the human-elephant conflict.
