The online issuance of passports by 51 divisional secretariats across the country started at Homagama divisional secretariat on June 15.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe and public security minister Tiran Alles were present at the launch.
Speaking on the occasion, president Wickremesinghe said that digitization will be implemented across all government sectors.
The goal is to establish comprehensive facilities where the public can access all necessary documents, from birth to death, in one convenient location.
As a part of this initiative, passport applicants will now have a simpler online application process available through 51 divisional secretariats spanning all 25 districts of the island, he said.
