President Ranil Wickremesinghe has reiterated his commitment to preserving the freedom of expression.

In this regard, he highlighted the repealing of the criminal defamation law, a step that no other country in the region has taken.

The president was speaking at the launch of the online issuance of passports at the Homagama Divisional Secretariat yesterday (15).

He emphasized that the proposed Electronic Broadcasting Regulatory Commission Act aims to provide recourse to aggrieved parties in cases of harm caused by electronic media.

This approach is employed in countries worldwide, he said, adding that he has instructed the inclusion of guidelines from the United Kingdom’s electronic media regulations in Sri Lanka’s implementation.
