A woman said to be a major drug dealer having foreign connections has been arrested by the STF, police said.

Dharmakeerthi Udeni Inuka Perera alias Disco was nabbed at Mutwal in Colombo yesterday (29) and a subsequent search of her home at Kaduwela netted 14 grams of heroin and four sharp weapons.

The 42-year-old is linked to Reuban, a drug dealer and organized criminal now in hiding in France, police said.

She is one of the 285 drug dealers taken into custody during a seven-hour raid in the western and southern province, according to the ministry of public security.

Minister Tiran Alles directed the combined operation by the police, army, air force and intelligence services following several weeks of planning.

Helicopters and drones were used in the raids that started at 5.00 am, and the arrestees were taken to police stations by noon.

They included 33 from Nugegoda, 70 from Mt. Lavinia, four from Negombo, 13 from Gampaha, 64 from Colombo, 12 from Panadura and 14 from Kalutara.

Nearly one kg each of heroin and cannabis were seized from their possession.

Police media spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said similar operations would continue in the future across the country.

Speaking to the media three days ago, minister Alles said the drug menace would be curbed by one way or another, with the president having given him instructions to take any measure required.
