Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential Candidate Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa asserted that the ‘Yahapalana’ government misused public funds to pursue legal action against him and his family based on false allegations.
Reflecting on the investigations launched against his family during that period, Rajapaksa expressed disbelief that such actions were taken by those who now hold the reins of power.
He further commented that the previous leaders seemed to find amusement in targeting his family.
He made these remarks while addressing a SLPP rally in the Matale area on Monday (9).
“Many politicians have historically had a distorted view of development. They lacked a vision for the country’s progress and were more focused on short-term political gains,” Rajapaksa said.
He accused them of making empty promises during election campaigns and neglecting the nation’s long-term development.
Rajapaksa said that the ‘Yahapalana’ government established a commission to investigate his family and filed numerous lawsuits against them. Despite being acquitted of all charges, these investigations were conducted at the expense of the taxpayers.
He expressed his frustration over the politically motivated nature of these allegations, citing examples such as investigations into his mother’s preschool over claims that his family owned a helicopter. He clarified that his family has no desire for revenge but was committed to serving the country and protecting its values.
“My party’s commitment is to a policy-driven approach to politics, as opposed to personal vendettas. I invite the electorate to support a government that would prioritise the nation’s development and protect its cultural heritage,” Rajapaksa said.
