Sri Lanka Podujana Pakshaya’s Presidential candidate Janaka Ratnayake submitted a complaint to Embilipitiya Police to investigate information about a fake opinion poll at a tuition class in Embilipitiya town with the so-called results being released on Facebook.
In the complaint he has informed that a group of NPP party members had set up a fake polling station in front of the Embilipitiya Municipal Council premises and spread fake information on social media that their Presidential candidate would win with a majority and this is a violation of election laws and regulations.
Ratnayake said fake ballot papers with the name of a Presidential candidate, fake ballot boxes and a thousand people from Embilipitiya area were brought to the place to conduct this illegal poll.
He further said those who conducted this poll had then announced that one candidate had won with a large majority and had released the footage to the social media. He added that this was a complete violation of the election laws and the Election Commission was informed about it.
He went on to say that all those involved should be brought before the law, as they have tried to divert the voters’ attention and create a false opinion.
When asked about this, Embilipitiya Police said that they got information about this and an investigation is being conducted in this regard.
NPP national executive member Ratnapura district organizer Shantha Padmakumara said that his party has nothing to do with this and that it was a survey conducted by some independent group.
